Exciting Changes Are Coming to Sunny Brae Elementary!
Sunny Brae is proud to announce that our new Global Awareness Magnet will be opening in Fall, 2018 for students in 1st through 5th grade. LAUSD magnets are specially themed programs that are open for enrollment to LAUSD students through the district’s eChoices.lausd.net website.
The Global Awareness Magnet at Sunny Brae will follow an innovative project-based multidisciplinary curriculum designed around integrated units with an emphasis in science and social studies. Students will engage in problem solving activities focused on real world situations and the needs of a global community. Through their study of history and the development of science and engineering practices, our students will master skills which allow them to understand the past, encourage their active participation in our democracy and build exploration skills. As the children work towards greater Global Awareness, they will understand that our world is complex and interdependent and their choices and actions may have repercussions locally, nationally or internationally. Our goal is for all of our young scholars to emerge from Sunny Brae’s magnet as the next generation of scholars and scientists with an emphasis in Global Citizenship and a commitment to act with empathy to change the world around them.
We are equally proud of the home school campus at Sunny Brae. Our exceptional teachers concentrate on hands-on lessons through the rigorous and proven system of differentiated instruction to support every student towards academic success and 100% graduation. Students are exposed to essential academic standards and explore global unit themes and issues through hands-on learning techniques. All students at Sunny Brae learn in modern classrooms with interactive white boards and a variety of technology including computers, iPads, and Chromebooks. Students visit the library, iPad Lab, Computer Lab, Robotics Lab, Art Lab, and Science Lab to extend their learning. Additionally, before and after school programs including Ready, Set, Go, LA’s Best, and Youth Services provide safe and enriching opportunities for students to benefit from an extended day at school. Other expanded learning opportunities at Sunny Brae include our award winning creative writing and video production program “An Author You Can’t Refuse,” and our innovative VEX robotics team “Bots and Pieces.”
The vibrancy of the Sunny Brae community is further enhanced by special programs through our active school PTA, participation in community events (including the Los Angles Cancer Challenge and the Los Angles Chinatown Firecracker Run), and special school events (including College and Career Night and Math and Science Night).
At Sunny Brae we believe that Global Awareness begins with our Winnetka community, and both aspects of our campus vigorously promote that ideal. Specializing in academic rigor for all students, we welcome you to visit the Global Awareness Magnet and the home school campus at Sunny Brae Avenue Elementary. Find us at www.sunnybrae.us.
